noun: hashtag; plural noun: hashtags
(on social media sites such as Twitter) a word or phrase preceded by a hash or pound sign (#) and used to identify messages on a specific topic.
There you go, that’s a hashtag. Now the next question is should you use a hashtag for your event? That really depends on your event... is it a private event or a shindig you want the world to know about?
When I host major event such as a convention or a concert I always make sure to use custom hashtags. It’s a great way to see what your attendees are posting about, and after all those are the conversations that matter most. For a convention or a concert for example the attendees are the ones that matter right? They are the ones that purchased all those seats. You can collect tons of free content regarding your event from the posts you see and people love it when companies share their photos online. Are you letting the bountiful harvest that is your fanbase go to waste?
Now let’s talk about a wedding, baby shower, or anything a bit more intimate. Some people want these moments totally private. I have held events where I have to let the guests know that no photography is allowed! This typically happens with high profile and private clients. On the flip side, having guests share their photos of your smaller events can also be a lot of fun! You get to see what your family and friends are posting. You can even create a special hashtag on party favors like the glasses in the image! For this event, a destination wedding, the bride and groom had really cute nicknames for each other and we thought blending them together as the official hashtag of the weekend would be really cool. The hashtag allowed us to follow all the guests’ journeys step by step on their way, which allowed the bride and groom to be a part of every aspect of the celebration even if they were not in the same space at the moment.
What kind of magic can you create with custom hashtags for your events? The possibilities are endless.
